Skiing around the areaIf you want to ski around the Mackay area, there is a number of places you can get to quite easily. Kinchant Dam is located about 40 km west of Mackay. Head out along either the Peak Down Highway or the Eungella Road, and follow the signs to the dam. There's a small resort there with hot and cold food, drinks and ice. There is a large 2 lane boat ramp with ample parking located near the picnic grounds.
Eungella Dam is much bigger, but further away. Follow the signs to Eungella National Park, continue on through the national park and along 24 km of dirt road to Eungella Dam. There's a concrete boat ramp located at the camp ground. There are no facilities at the dam, apart from composting toilets and cold showers. A camp permit is required if you want to camp there. There is an honesty box located at the toilets for camp fees. Alternatively, pre purchase these from Sunwater before you go up there.
Skiing on Marian weir is also an option if you are a member of
the Mackay Ski Club
(All designated ski areas are recharged after recent rain. If you're coming into Mackay from out of town and you're not sure, give us a ring (49526530) and we can update you on local waterways.)
